Philip John Smith of Greenwich, Conn, passed peacefully on Aug. 10, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Watford City, N.D. on Dec. 19, 1940, to Leslie and Marie Smith, he graduated from Oklahoma City University.
A preacher’s son, Philip‘s career started at IBM before Lloyd Rader, Sr. recruited him to run the computer division of the Oklahoma Dept. of Public Welfare. After decades at the helm, Philip transitioned into the role of Chief Information Officer for the Oklahoma University Medical Center. Philip retired from public service in 1995 and thereafter consulted with various technology companies until his full retirement in 2005. In addition to his successful career, Philip was active in his church and a devoted community volunteer. He organized several Christian meditation groups and served as instructor and mentor for literacy and English as a second language programs.
A caring, giving and loving person, Philip is survived by his beloved companion Faith, two children -- Nicole Nuttall of Fairfield, Conn., and Jason Smith of Dix Hills, N.Y., and two stepsons – Jason Moore of Broken Arrow, Okla. and Chris Moore of Tulsa, Okla. He was the very proud grandfather of four grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. He is also survived by four siblings, Rachel Manrique of Bellingham, Wash., Sherryl Sweeney and brother Lynn Smith of Oklahoma City and Dale Smith of Arlington, Texas, along with many other loved ones.
The family is deeply grateful to the outstanding professionals at Greenwich Hospital’s home hospice program who went above and beyond the ordinary in every way.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, One West Putnam Avenue in Greenwich at 2 p.m. on Sept. 9. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenwich Hospital home hospice program or the Closer to Free Fund of the Yale Cancer Center.
