Edith (“Edie”) Lucille Wilson, beloved wife of James Ronald (“Ron”) Wilson, Jr., MD, died peacefully at home on August 8, 2018 after dealing with cancer for the past year.
Edie was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 8, 1943, the daughter of the Dr. John and Mrs. Edith Purpura. She graduated from Packer Collegiate Institute and the University of Miami, FL. Edie earned a Bachelor of Education degree and taught elementary school during her husband’s medical school years and internship at Greenwich Hospital. After five years away from Greenwich, the family moved back in 1973 when Ron established an ophthalmology practice based in their home. For the next thirty years, Edie worked as office manager at their practice.
Edie loved participating in sports and showed her skills in tennis, water-skiing, swimming and ping-pong. Many a male challenger was humbled by her talent. Her greatest love, however, was her family.
Edie is survived by her husband, daughter Christine Edith Nascimento-Wilson (Dunja), son J. Ronald Wilson, III (Cathy), twin sister Vita Bernhardt, brothers Anthony and Graham James Purpura (Joan), grandchildren Jessica, Catherine, TJ, Hayley, Leia, Bennett, Mackenzie, and Karsten and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and brother John A. Purpura.
A celebration of Edie’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 3:00 p.m. In memory of Edie, please spend time with your loved ones and perform an extra act of kindness.
