Michael Karfias, fondly referred to as “Papou”, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 28, 2018 after a brief illness. He was born in Athens, Greece on February 17th, 1933.
He is survived by his daughters Rene Dmuchowski and Michele Glassman and son in laws Scott and Joel. His six grandchildren Kate, Ben, Sophie, Scarlett, Taylor and Ryan will miss their Papou tremendously. He also leaves the best girl in the world, Stella, his beloved Boston Terrier. In addition, he will be missed by his in-laws Raymond and Ann Augustine and his nephews Ray Ray and Timmy and many nieces and extended family in Greece.
Michael was predeceased by his wife of 35 years Ann, his parents George and Erato as well as his four older sisters who doted on him.
He began his career in the Greek Navy and then worked on Aristotle Onassis’ yacht “The Christina”. After that he moved on to “The Oceanic” where he met Ann. After moving to the States, Michael worked as a Banquet Captain at the Rye Town Hilton for decades.
A man of many interests, he loved the NFL and The Patriots, Soccer, planting his vegetables and UCONN Women’s Basketball. Most of all he loved travelling and just recently returned from Mexico with his family and friends.
His family would like to thank everyone who cared for him during this past month: Sarah Gamble, Erin Olsen and the rest of the staff at Pure Medical, all of the doctors especially Dr. Drummond and Dr. Choi, nurses, care assistants and valets at Stamford Hospital. We can’t thank you enough.
